I was thinking about our Independence Day today, and was considering greeting people with a ‘Happy Independence from Great Britain Day’.

I’ve thought today the Catholic Mission San Antonio de Valero, now commonly known as ‘The Alamo’. Where Texians gave their lives for Independence from Mexico. Texas would gain it’s Independence, only to relinquish it’s independence (as well as land that included New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, etc) ten years later to the United States which offered to pay the new government’s incredible debt.

Ultimately our independence has given us the freedom to give up as much of our freedom as we choose.

“O God, make the bad people good, and the good people nice”

-Prayer of a little English Girl (From ‘What’s so Amazing about Grace?’ by Philip Yancey)

Liberal has become such a negative word. From dictionary.com:

1. favorable to progress or reform

Anybody who wouldn’t want ‘progress’ is foolish. Let’s face it, the United States was founded on ‘progress and reform’. The reality is that ‘liberal’ has taken on a new meaning. An almost ‘if it feels good, do it’ mind-frame. I’m reminded of the recurring theme in Judges “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” It’s the ‘liberals’ support of pro-choice and so called ‘gay-rights’ that have fundamentalist Christians so radically against so-called ‘liberals’.

Then we have those who claim to be a ‘social-liberal and fiscal-conservative’. This is sort of the easy way out of a discussion, but fundamentally impossible. You can’t support social programs without paying for them. If you’re a social-liberal you have to be willing to open you wallet.

If you’re pro-life, be pro-life. Being anti-abortion and pro-death penalty is not pro-life, it’s anti-abortion. Starting wars based on lies and fear is another issue altogether, I’m not even going to get into here.

Churches get to work, if you were fulfilling the call of Christ there would be no need for the social welfare programs in this country.

“The world is sleeping in the dark, that the church just can’t fight, ’cause it’s asleep in the light’ – (Asleep in the Light, by Keith Green)

“O God please, make the Democrats good, and the Republicans nice”
